Study Completed for World’s Newest Kraft Pulp Mill

Date: 6/12/2011

A multinational pulp and paper team including three Beca AMEC employees has returned from completing a hazard and operability study (HAZOP) of over 300 process drawings for Montes del Plata in Uruguay.

Beca AMEC led the study in southwestern Uruguay, the site of the world’s newest kraft pulp mill. The study involved two weeks of intensive HAZOP (process reviews) and HAZCON (construction reviews) sessions where every detail of the planned process was reviewed to ensure it is both safe and easy to operate.

Led by Forest Industries Business Director Tony Johnson, the study is one of the larger exercises conducted by Beca AMEC in recent years. The wider team included Process Engineer Celest Yeoh (Tauranga-based), Senior Process Engineer Barbara Johnson (Melbourne-based), Jude Talbot (AMEC Vancouver), Denis Fournier (AMEC Quebec) and Isabel Celis (AMEC Chile).

The team generated over 1,100 recommendations from 20 sessions. A total of 266 people attended the sessions, with participants coming from Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Sweden, Finland and China.

Mill Manager Hector Araneda spoke highly of the team, saying “Esto un equipo superior que se realizó extremadamente bien” – a top team who performed extremely well.

Beca AMEC embraces the values of integrity, teamwork, respect and professional excellence.
