Softwood Resource

Drawing on specialist knowledge to develop effective strategies and create investment opportunities.

With an extensive softwood plantation, the Queensland State Government Department decided to explore strategies for utilising the resource effectively and to create investment opportunities.

Beca AMEC was commissioned to provide a plantation report that would enable the Department to develop an Investment Memorandum. In broad terms, the report would cover:

  • the resource
  • marketing opportunities
  • processing options
  • an economic analysis.

Beca AMEC carried out an analysis of properties and qualities of the timber resource, and conducted an evaluation of the timing and quantities of harvests.
Having established this benchmark data, the team was then able to investigate the costs and implications of utilising the resource in different ways. This required a comprehensive analysis of market trends and market opportunities for a range of wood products.

Each option required an evaluation of possible process plant options, complemented by a more detailed analysis of the short-listed process plant options, including technology, scale, costs and cash flow analysis.

Beca AMEC made use of specialist forest resource knowledge and wood product market analysis from Vancouver-based parent, AMEC, and specialist sub-consultants. This provided an international dimension to the client’s possible options for the softwood resource. It also enabled the team to provide the client with a comprehensive report in a short timeframe.
